James Mellick, Associate Professor of Studio Art

Biography

James Mellick serves as associate professor of studio art. He holds a B.A. from Greenville College (1969) and an M.F.A. from Southern Illinois University (1973). Prior to coming to Cedarville, he taught full time at Colby-Sawyer College, Houghton College, and Calvin College. He has taught courses in sculpture, 2D and 3D design, printmaking, painting, drawing, introduction to art, and art history. He also taught as an adjunct professor at Ohio Northern University, Columbus College of Art and Design, and Penland School of Crafts. The majority of his 40 years of experience has been as a full-time sculptor and craftsman in central Ohio where he has developed a national reputation with 160 exhibitions in the Midwest and through galleries in New York City and Chicago. His work has been published in Craft Arts International, Woodwork and Woodshop News magazines, and in several college and high school textbooks. He has published articles in Crafts Report and various art newsletters and served as juror and curator for several regional and national exhibitions. Professor Mellick is a charter member of the Christians in the Visual Arts and knows that his talent is on loan from the Creator. In 1997, he built Heartwood Studios and Farm near Marysville, Ohio where he and Marcia live peaceably with two llamas, two dogs, two cats and a variety of wild critters. Professor Mellick has been at Cedarville since 2008.
