Sport Business Management

Sport Business Management Program

Cedarville's sport business management curriculum follows guidelines established by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Profession and the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation. In addition to classroom work, students also receive real-world experience through practicums and an internship.

There are three practicums each sport business management student is required to complete. A minimum of 30 hours is required for each practicum.

SMGT 2910 Campus Sport Management Practicum (1 credit)

This on-campus practicum allows you to be involved in a variety of activities compatible with athletic and recreational sporting events and experiences on-campus. A minimum of 30 hours is required for each practicum. Requires department approval.

SMGT-2920: Recreation Management Practicum (1 credit)

This practicum provides the sport management major the opportunity to assist faculty members or staff on the Cedarville University campus with their sport management responsibilities for a required minimum of 30 hours total. Requires sophomore status or permission from the instructor.

SMGT-4910: Athletic Administration Practicum (1 credit)

This practicum provides the sport management major the opportunity to assist a local athletic administrator with their responsibilities or do something related to you field of interest for a required minimum of 30 hours total. Prerequisites: SMGT-3200 Facility Design and Management; SMGT-3300 Event Planning and Production.

SMGT-4990: Internship in Sport Management (9 or 12 credits)

The capstone course for sport business management majors, this required internship provides you with actual work experience in a sport business management field you want to pursue.

You may choose to complete the internship during the spring or summer after all other required coursework must be completed. Some students opt to complete this internship during their final semester, while others complete it even after walking at commencement. You may opt for a nine-week internship with a minimum of 40 hours per week (9 credits) or a 12-week internship with a minimum of 40 hours per week for 12 weeks (12 credits). Your academic advisor must approve your internship in advance.

Your internship will allow you to put your learning into practice and to:

  • Apply theories and principles to specific situations.
  • Demonstrate a growing awareness of organization and administrative structure, techniques, and procedures.
  • Work successfully with a variety of personalities and groups.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior.
