Cost

Course fee is $750 (not eligible for tuition remission).

This fee includes the cost of the course and EMT shirt. Students may purchase their textbook, workbook, blood pressure cuff, and stethoscope at the University Bookstore. Students will be responsible for the cost of the National Registry Exam.

Emergency Care (11th edition) book and workbook - students are required to have an unused 11th edition workbook.

Course Overview

The course includes didactic instruction, laboratory practice and clinical experience in a variety of settings. Lecture and Laboratory experiences are coordinated with clinical experiences.Each student is expected to complete 20 hours of clinicals in addition to the classroom commitment. The EMS education training courses give students fundamental skills and intense training to prepare them for the National Registry Exam. After completing the course and passing the NRE, students will be qualified to provide emergent care in a pre-hospital setting to their level of certification. Students enrolled at Cedarville may be awarded three semester hours each toward general electives for EMT-B by the Registrar's Office when the certificate is presented.

Course Outcomes

• Students will be able to define and practice the role of the EMT-B in the health care delivery system.
• Students will understand and apply anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology in the assessment and therapy of critically ill and injured persons.
• Students will develop skills in rapid assessment, interpretation of data, and therapeutic intervention, and ill or injured persons.
• Students will perform technical skills competently, including Basic Cardiac Life Support, Patient transportation, and communication and documentation.
• Students will assume responsibility for continued growth and self-improvement.

Admission Requirements

1. Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
2. Be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English. Must have a TOEFL score of 79 on the internet-based test if English is not the student's primary language.
3. Hold a valid drivers license.
4. Have no previous felony convictions.
5. Be at least 18 years of age at the end of the course, in accordance with OAC 4765-8-01.
6. Be able to lift 50 pounds.
7. Be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time.
8. Any student carrying over 16 hours must have their advisor's signature on the application form.
9. A physical must be completed prior to the start of class, including measles vaccine, TB test, and the start of the Hepatitis B series of shots. In the event this has not been completed, a deadline of 2 weeks from the start of class will be given to complete it. Any student that fails to complete this will be automatically dismissed from the program.

This course is rigorous and may be offered several times during the year. Although incoming freshmen are welcome, we encourage them to take the course after one semester of study.

A student cannot be kept from taking the course because of academic concerns, however the student may receive the recommendation that he/she not take the course at this time. It is highly advisable that the student take this recommendation seriously.

Registration

Students may register online for this class. In addition to registering online, students must complete an application which is required by the State. Enrollment will remain open until the registration deadline, when payment is due. Any payments after this deadline will incur a $35 late fee.

No refunds will be issued after the registration deadline. If a student wishes to withdraw, they must do so no later than one week before the class begins, in which the course fee (minus a $35 processing fee) will be refunded.

A confirmation of the class meeting time and room location will be emailed to the student the week before the class begins. The course fee must be paid by the first day of class. A student will not be permitted to begin classes if the course fee is not paid.

There will be no course fee refund after class has been in session for 16 class hours. A ten percent administrative fee will be deducted from the remaining course fee. Students dismissed from the program will forfeit all money paid.

After Applying

You will need to have a current physical and TB test for the EMT class. This means that a physical and TB test must be on file that is no less than 6 months old when the class begins. You will also need to submit a record of your Hep B vaccine and measles vaccine. University Medical Services has agreed to provide physicals for current EMT students. If a student chooses to use their own physician, they need to have the EMS physical form completed by their physician.

The textbook and workbook, Emergency Care (11th edition), blood pressure cuff, and stethoscope are required. They may be purchased at the university bookstore.
