Meet our Faculty and Staff

Tom Mach (Chair)

Tom Mach

Dr. Mach serves as Professor of History.  He received his doctorate from the University of Akron in United States History.  He taught United States History and American National Government at Mount Vernon Nazarene College for six years.  His areas of interest include the political history of the 19th and 20th centuries with a focus on Ohio in the Gilded Age and Christian voter blocks in the last century. 

His published works include articles, book reviews and “Gentleman George” Hunt Pendleton:  Party Politics and Ideological Identity in Nineteenth Century America (Kent, OH: Kent State University Press, 2007).

Prior to coming to Cedarville in 2000, Dr. Mach served as an Honors Program Director and an Honors Seminar Coordinator.  He has also been named as an Advanced Placement Reader in United States History for the Educational Testing Service.   At Cedarville, Dr. Mach spearheaded the university’s successful pursuit for reaccreditation from the Higher Learning Commission serving as Self-Study Coordinator.

Kim Boeke-Wade

Kim Boeke-Wade

Mrs. Wade serves as the administrative assistant in the department of history and government. She is married and has three children and four grandchildren. Her son graduated from Cedarville in 2003, and one of her daughters graduated in 2009. Kim enjoys spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren, and loves to travel. She has been at Cedarville since 1992.

Marc Clauson

Marc Clauson

Dr. Clauson, Professor of History received his M. A. in Political Science from Marshall University, Juris Doctorate from West Virginia University, Ph. D. work in Economic Theory at West Virginia University, M. A. from Liberty University in Christian Thought (Early and Patristic), M. Th. from Liberty University (Reformation and Post-Reformation History of Theology), Ph. D. work in Modern European Intellectual History from the University of Kentucky, Ph. D. in Modern European Intellectual History and Church History from the Universiteit van die Vrystaat, Bloemfontein, South Africa. He anticipates beginning work on a graduate diploma in Political Theory from the London School of Economics.

His published works include A Study of Scottish Hermeneutical Method from John Knox to the Early twentieth Century: From Christian to Secular (Edwin Mellen Press, 2004) and A History of the Idea of God’s Law (Theonomy): Its Origins, Development and Place in Political and Legal Thought (Edwin Mellen Press, 2006). With Dr. Mark Smith and Dr. Tom Mach he is working on a new book entitled Meandering to Zion: The Political Thought of the Christian Left.

Interests and areas of expertise include Reformation and Post-Reformation history and theology, history of political and economic thought, history of legal thought, history of science, history of theology and the relations between and among these. He also has an interest in the history and development of Christian worldview as a concept as well as worldview issues in general. Dr. Clauson is ordained in the Presbyterian Church in America and the Reformed Episcopal Church.

Tom Cornman

Tom Cornman

Dr. Cornman serves as Professor of History, Academic Vice President and chief Academic Officer. He began his career as a church historian, teaching classes in Bible and theology, as well as western civilization U.S. history and American church history. Dr. Cornman holds a Ph.D from the University of Illinois at Chicago; an M.A. from Temple University; an M.Div. from Talbot School of Theology, Biola University; and a B.S. form Philadelphia College of Bible. His publications include contributions to the Moody Handbook of Preaching (Moody, 2008), and Foundational Faith: Unchanging Truth for an Ever-Changing World (Moody 2003). He also served as general editor for Proclaiming Jesus: Essays on the Centrality of Christ in the Church (Moody, 2007). In 2003, his work Caterpillars and New-Fangled Religion was published by University Press of America.

Frank Jenista

Frank Jenista

Dr. Frank Jenista serves as Professor of International Studies. He grew up overseas as the son of missionary parents. He graduated from Cedarville and returned to join the faculty following 25 years of service as a U.S. diplomat. A Senior Foreign Service Officer, Dr. Jenista's international assignments included service at U.S. embassies in Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, South America, and twice in the Philippines. He is the author of a book on Philippine-American history. In addition, he has published articles in professional journals, has written numerous research and policy papers for the State Department, and served as speech writer for ambassadors and other high level U.S. officials. Professor Jenista received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and has been at Cedarville since 2000.

Jewerl Maxwell

Jewerl Maxwell

Dr. Maxwell serves as an Assistant Professor of Political Science. He completed his undergraduate work at Muskingum College (2003), where he triple-majored in Political Science, History, and Public Affairs. Upon graduating from Muskingum Dr. Maxwell earned an M.A. (2004) and a Ph.D. (2008), both in Political Science, from Miami University. Prior to arriving at Cedarville, he taught at Emory & Henry College and Thiel College. Dr. Maxwell teaches courses in American politics, public policy, and comparative politics. He has conducted extensive research regarding presidential unilateral powers, specifically during the Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, and Clinton administrations.

Murray Murdoch

Murray Murdoch

Dr. Murdoch serves as Senior Professor of History. He was the men's tennis coach at Cedarville College from 1965 to 1994 and still enjoys participating in the sport. He is the Chairman of the Men's National Tournament Committee and a member of the Board of Directors of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Dr. Murdoch is the Senior Pastor of Westerville Grace Baptist Church. Professor Murdoch received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1971 and has been at Cedarville since 1965.

Patrick Oliver

Patrick Oliver

Professor Oliver serves as Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and Director of the Criminal Justice Program. Prior to coming to Cedarville in 2005, he served 27 years in law enforcement, including Chief of Police in the City of Fairborn, Grandview Heights, and Cleveland, Ohio, and as Ranger Chief of Cleveland Metropolitan Parks. He also spent eleven years as a trooper with the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

He received his Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Masters of Business Administration from Baldwin Wallace College. In addition, Professor Oliver has completed programs with the Penn State University Police Executive School, FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development School, and the Ohio Association of Police Executive Leadership College. He is also a Certified Law Enforcement Executive. Besides teaching and program development, Professor Oliver serves in many law enforcement organizations. These include the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police (consultant, trainer, and former President), the International Association of Chiefs of Police (consultant, trainer, and Civil Rights committee), the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (consultant, trainer, and the education and training committee), and as a Commissioner for the Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

Professor Oliver and his wife have three children.

Bob Parr

Bob Parr

Dr. Parr serves as Professor of Sociology. His previous and current interests span a wide range of experience in theology, cultural anthropology, the sociology of religion, marriage and the family. After coming to Cedarville in 1980, Dr. Parr was instrumental in establishing the Social Work Program and securing professional accreditation through the Council of Social Work Education. Dr. Parr has conducted a Pastors Leadership Conference in Kenya, Africa.  He has also served in various capacities at Lake Ann Camp in Michagan and ministries to congregations as an interim pastor.  Dr. Parr earned his Ph.D. from the Ohio State University in 1987.

David Rich

David Rich

Dr. Rich serves as Associate Professor of Public Administration and Political Science. He completed his undergraduate work at Cedarville College and his DPA through Western Michigan University. Prior to returning to Cedarville in 2000, he gained twenty years of experience in local government, working as a city manager for the last twelve years. He has special interests in state and local government, privatization, and the Christian's role in political systems. While in Plymouth, Michigan he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Conference of Western Wayne Personnel Advisory Board.

Kevin Sims

Kevin Sims

Dr. Sims is Professor of Political Science. Previous to coming to Cedarville, he invested six years as Chairman and Professor of History at Pillsbury College. Dr. Sims then spent some time teaching at Azusa Pacific University. He was a staff assistant to Congressman David Dreier from 1984 to 1990. Dr. Sims received his Ph.D. from The Claremont Graduate School in 1991 and has been at Cedarville since 1990.

Mark Smith

Mark Smith

Dr. Smith serves as assistant professor of political science and the director of the Center for Political Studies. He teaches courses in American politics, constitutional law, and research methodology/data analysis. Dr. Smith has authored numerous refereed journal articles, book chapters, and other publications. His primary research interest is in the field of religion and American politics. He received his B.A. in history from Bryan College (1992), an M.A. in the history of Christianity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (1995), and an M.A. (1997) and Ph.D. (2001) in political science from the University of Georgia. Before arriving at Cedarville in 2004, Dr. Smith taught at Tulane University and Calvin College.

Rick Tison

Rick Tison

Dr. Tison serves as an assistant professor of history. He completed his undergraduate work at Oakland University (1994), where he majored in English and minored in Political Science. Dr. Tison’s M.A (1999) from Baylor University is in an interdisciplinary field of study (Church-State Studies) focusing on First Amendment legal history. Dr. Tison’s Ph.D (2008) from the University of Oklahoma is in intellectual history/history of science. Prior to arriving at Cedarville, he taught in the Texas A&M University system (Corpus Christi and Kingsville campuses). Dr. Tison teaches History of Civilizations and the Teaching Social Studies Methods. He is currently preparing a manuscript for submission to the Johns Hopkins University Press History of Science and Religion Series.

Robert Vaughn

Robert Vaughn

Prof. Vaughn joined the Cedarville faculty in January 2009 as Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice. He completed his undergraduate degree at The Ohio State University and obtained a law degree from Capital University Law School in 1998.

Prior to coming to Cedarville, Prof. Vaughn worked as an attorney in state government for over ten years. Most recently, he served as a staff attorney at the Supreme Court of Ohio. He also served as Assistant Attorney General, Crime Victims Services, and as a staff attorney, Crime Victims Compensation Program, for the Court of Claims of Ohio.

Married since 1996, he and his wife Pamela have four children. Both Prof. Vaughn and his wife are active in their local church and within their community.
