This course is designed to provide English majors with foundational knowledge of their discipline. Students will study the works of Plato, Aristotle, Dante, Longinus, Boccaccio, Hume, Hegel, Kant, Wordsworth, Shelley and James, among others. Conversation will focus on three main questions: What is the proper role of the artist in society? What is the function of art? How does one evaluate art?
