Cedarville University offers several degrees options in the biological sciences:

Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biology - The B.S. in biology prepares students for graduate study in the biological sciences by including the course requirements prescribed by many of the leading graduate-level biology degree programs in the nation. This major enhances the student's depth of knowledge in biology and increases the breadth of exposure to chemistry, mathematics, and physics.

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Biology - provides general course background in the biological sciences.

Bachelor of Science in Molecular & Cellular Biology - prepares students for graduate study in cellular or molecular biology, genetics, and related fields in the biological sciences. Cedarville is one of only a few conservative Christian schools that offer a major in this important field.

Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science - aims to prepare graduates with a good foundation for entering vocations in ecology, conservation biology, ecosystem restoration, environmental education, and graduate study.

Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Life Science Education - prepares you to teach biology in grades 7-12.

Why should I study biology at Cedarville University?

The biology faculty members at Cedarville emphasize a core curriculum that provides a broad biological background for students that are balanced well with a liberal arts curriculum and Cedarville’s Bible minor. Our biology faculty members are distinctive in their commitment to biblical integration in the sciences. Students will tailor their major based upon their professional interests and goals by working with their biology faculty academic advisor.

  2. Students will be able to identify and explain tenets of the nature of science.
  3. Students will be able to integrate factual content in order to solve scientific problems.
  4. Students will be able to explain evolutionary mechanisms and critique evolutionary theory.
  5. Students will demonstrate broad-based background knowledge in the biological sciences.
  6. Students will demonstrate proficiency in common laboratory techniques associated with the biological sciences.
  7. Students will demonstrate an understanding of ethical considerations necessary for stewardship of the human species and the environment.

Of those surveyed (since 2006) more than 90 percent of our graduates are employed in the sciences and/or attended graduate school.

We offer a wide variety of student research opportunities in our laboratories. As a Cedarville biology student, you will have access to excellent lab facilities and hi-tech instruments for both laboratory and field applications. Cedarville University is a sustaining partner of Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies that widens the scope of our curriculum along with several travel study/study abroad options.

The biology faculty is comprised of 12 full-time professors that come from diverse backgrounds within the broad field of biology. With this diversity of faculty, we are able to offer a great depth and breadth of courses from which you may personalize your biology major to match your career goals. We seek to develop a strong foundation of biological knowledge in each of our students while training them to think critically, biblically, and scientifically.

    • We offer state of the art labs and equipment including Shimadzu Gas Chromatograph and GC-Mass Spectrometer, Varian Atomic Absorption Spectrometer.
    • In addition to course laboratory space we have several labs designated for environmental science, ecology, plant physiology, cellular biology and genetics research.
    • We also have a wide variety of "field labs" including a 40-acre Prairie Restoration, Wetland Restoration, Cedar Lake, and The Campus Arboretum (>1000 trees)
