About the Geology and Geoscience Majors

Geology

The geology major includes courses in mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, and biology. Geology courses include physical and historical geology, invertebrate paleontology, philosophy of science, mineralogy, petrology, geomorphology, environmental geology, structural geology, geology readings, field camp, petroleum geology, stratigraphy, and sedimentology. We are also require our students to take geographic information systems, because it is now being used widely in many geologic disciplines. Senior capstone experiences include a yearlong senior research project and a course to prepare our graduates for the Professional Geology exam, which is required by many states to work as a geologist. Upon graduation, students are well prepared to begin work as geologist, or they can go to graduate school for more focused training in a specific geological discipline.

The geoscience major includes courses in biology, chemistry, zoology, botany, ecology, statistics, environmental ethics, meteorology, environmental science, ecosystem science, geographic information systems, and public policy. Geology courses include physical and historical geology, philosophy of science, mineralogy, petrology, geomorphology, environmental geology, and geology readings. Senior capstone experiences include a yearlong senior research project and a course to prepare our graduates for the Professional Geology exam, which is required by many states to work as a geologist. Upon graduation, students are well prepared for beginning geological work in environmental or geological consultation companies. Students are also prepared to do graduate work in various environmental fields.
