Applied Research Project Research Thesis Reflective Practice National Board Certification

Prerequisite EDU-7200 Research Design
Purpose To address a topic, from a research approach, that is directly related to the student's classroom or school. To promote scholarly research and writing. In some cases the thesis is used as a stepping stone for entrance into a Ph.D. program. To promote critical thinking and collaboration among teachers, administrators, and the education research community, through action research. To promote the skills, knowledge, and dispositions necessary to be a Master Teacher.
Outcome Scholarly paper that reports the research and results of the project. Written thesis and a faculty defense. Written report with a multi-media presentation (e.g., PowerPoint, Prezi). Portfolio for National Board certification review.
Students who select this capstone: Typically will not seek a terminal degree in education. This research project provides students with an opportunity to use research skills in resolving an educational issue that is of interest to the student. Typically have a desire to pursue a terminal degree in education and use this experience as a springboard for a future doctoral dissertation. Typically will not seek a terminal degree in education. This reflective project provides students with an opportunity to systematically question, reflect upon, assess, and report pedagogical practices within their own classroom. Typically want advanced national teaching credentials in addition to state licensure. Students, who successfully complete the requirements for National Board Certification, can substitute this certification to satisfy the capstone requirements.

Anticipated completion time One semester One or more semesters One semester Upon receipt of the National Board certificate
Extension If an extension is necessary, register for EDU-7965 Continuing Research up to two times for no cost/no credit. An incomplete grade may be granted to allow completion of the project before the end of the following semester. An extension is not necessary. This option is completed outside of the M.Ed. program and serves as a substitution within the M.Ed. degree program.
