Confidentiality is an important element of the counseling process. The student’s identity and ongoing work in counseling is kept strictly confidential. We are obligated both legally and ethically to obtain the student’s written permission in order to share any counseling information with the following exceptions:
- We regularly consult with physical or mental health care professionals regarding students with whom we are working. This allows us to gain other perspectives and ideas as to how to best help a student reach his/her goals. This information will be carefully guarded and used with discrimination and will only be used with the student’s best interest in mind.
- If we feel a student is an immediate threat to himself/herself or others (suicidal or homicidal), we may need to report these statements to those who can insure the student’s safety and/or the safety of others.
- Information about physical or sexual abuse may be reportable in order to insure the safety of children or the elderly.
