Confidentiality

Confidentiality is an important element of the counseling process. The student’s identity and ongoing work in counseling is kept confidential. In order to share counseling information, counselors must first obtain the student’s written permission with the following exceptions:

  1. If we feel a student is an immediate threat to himself/herself or others (suicidal or homicidal), we may need to report these statements to those who can insure the student’s safety and/or the safety of others.
  2. Information about physical or sexual abuse may be reportable in order to insure the safety of children or the elderly.
  3. If student’s records are subpoenaed by a judge, counselors are obligated to comply.
