What if Safari doesn't connect to the Internet, but shows I'm connected?

Verify you are properly set up to access the CedarNet network by setting up your wireless. If you are properly connected, we recommend that you hook your computer up to an Ethernet cable and download Firefox.

What do I do if I keep dropping my Internet connection?

You should check your wireless card and make sure it is up-to-date. Don't assume that a new computer has the newest drivers since technology changes fast and things go out of date quickly. To check to see if it's up-to-date, open the device manager on your computer and go to the wireless card tab and record the version number. Then visit the computer manufacturer's website (e.g., Dell, Toshiba, HP, etc.), find your computer and the download/drivers section. Verify that the version you recorded is the latest driver. Otherwise, download and install the version from the website.

How do I get programs onto my personally-owned computer that are on CedarNet?

Unfortunately you cannot install or run University software on your own computer. We only buy licenses for University's computers, not personally owned computers. Please visit an open computer lab or use the computer in your room to access these programs.

My wireless doesn't work in my dorm room, what do I do?

There are a few things you want to check to make sure they are not interfering with your wireless connection, such as cordless phones, microwave ovens, and other wireless electronics. To improve reception, look for cordless phones and other electronics that use the 5.8GHz or 900MHz frequencies as they won't interfere. Make sure these items are not in the path from your computer to the router on the wall. Unfortunately, your hall mates electronic devices can interfere with your wireless as well and may cause it not to work.

Why did my system lock up after installing the University's antivirus software?

The most likely cause is that you already had an antivirus program installed on your computer when you installed the University's antivirus package because both of the programs are trying to work at the same time. You can remove the old antivirus software by either using the uninstall program that came with your software or go to the Control Panel and use the Add/Remove Software feature.

What do I do if my CedarNet username and password stops working?

AIM won't connect even though I'm connected to the Internet

If you are able to get out to an outside website and it still won't work, then you will need to change a port setting under the settings to 5190. The port is probably defaulted to 443 and needs to be changed in order to connect properly.

How do I update my Network driver?

If your computer keeps losing connection, it is a good idea to see if your system has the latest driver available. To update your driver, right-click on My Computer and go to Properties. Click on Hardware and open up the Device Manager. Expand your Network Adapters and right-click on the wireless adapter and click on Update Driver. You can also go to the website of the company who made your system and go to the drivers and downloads section and find the latest driver there.

How do I back up my documents?

You can use either a CD or a DVD. However, creating a DVD requires your system have the capabilities to burn a DVD; otherwise, you can only use a CD. Put the disk in the drive and drag all your documents that you want to put on the disk and then burn it. You can also use programs such as Roxio and Nero to burn data--these programs give you better options to backup your documents.
