Christian Design Thinking: Being God's Creative Image Bearers

Presentation Details:
Industrial designers are the largest group of "working artists" in the field of creative studies. Industrial designers work in the third dimension of design and are very often the cohesion point of the manufacturing and engineering of products, the aesthetic appeal of products and the business component of successful products. But it is also more than just products. Industrial Design (ID) professionals create the vision and use of interior and exterior spaces, landscapes, transportation methodologies (planes, trains, automobiles, trains, bicycles, etc.). However, the field has been devoid of an intentional Christ-centered approach until the Industrial and Innovative Design Major was collaboratively created. And at its core, if you don't know, love and respect the creator, it is very difficult to be truly creative. This presentation explores the methodologies, mindset, skills and tactics to apply design thinking to creative problem solving of all types.

What is Industrial Design?

Presentation Details:
While many areas of design, like graphic design, fashion design, website design and more are easily understood, the field of "industrial design" is far more mysterious. And ironically industrial designers are often called the largest group of working artists in the creative arts. Industrial designers live in a world of the "in between" creating intersections between engineering, art, business, manufacturing and marketing. Further, industrial designer assist brands, companies, municipalities, film producers, video gaming producers, architects and entrepreneurs with a glimpse of the future by assisting in the research, exploration and anticipation of consumer wants and needs. The discipline is ever fresh, not easily defined and an exemplary example of our creator's innovation and artistry in the geographic, astrophysical and biological world that is all His handiwork. Whether is is furniture, electronic devices, home appliances, jewelry, cars, lobbies, or the latest science fiction world in the next "other worldly" space film, an industrial designer was part of the process.

God & Government, The Cost of Discipleship, and other topics.

Presentation Details:

Mark 5: Christ Confronts Post-Modern Man
We are always tempted to make Christ what we need him to be. Mark 5 makes it clear though that Christ dictates his own terms to us. Post-Modernism, at heart, is about the abolition of authority outside of the self. Christ demonstrates his authority over a demon, sickness, and death in this passage. Christ demands that we kneel before him as authoritative God, so post-modernity cannot be reconciled with the Christ we see here. I have several talks I can give, most focusing on the Christian's relationship to the political world and to the culture at large. What does the Bible teach us about these issues and what are our responsibilities as we strive to be in the world but not of it.

The Tyranny of the Minority: The Supreme Court as a Threat to Republican Government
The Supreme Court is generally viewed as the protector of Rights & Liberties and as the "least dangerous" branch of government. But given the Right to Privacy, the Court has usurped the people's sovereignty by carving out protections in areas of the law that ought to be up to the people and their elected officials. Abortion and homosexual rights are the clearest examples of how the Court has used its power inappropriately. In reality, the Constitution says nothing of these issues, which means politics, and not the law, ought to determine our states' and nation's approach to these matters.

God & Government, The Cost of Discipleship, and other topics are available. Let's discuss what might be a great fit for your group!

Transforming the World for Christ through a Psychology Major.

Presentation Details:
God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5). The purpose in life for believers is to follow the work that Christ has set before us; that work is to reconcile those who have experienced separation and brokenness from one another and ultimately from God. As we can see through the life of Christ, the work of reconciliation was a truly difficult one; one that required his all. Jesus knew what was in man (John 2:25) that "they are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart..." (Ephesians 4:18)

The goal of psychology is to study and understand the human condition: how we think and why we behave the way that we do. At Cedarville University, our goal is to understand psychology from a Biblical Worldview, which puts psychological knowledge within the framework of God's truth--to know our humanity and to know how God can bring about change.

Students who study psychology at Cedarville University emerge as insightful individuals who can skillfully engage people in all walks of life for the sake of Christ: in ministry outreach, social and clinical settings, business environments, service-oriented occupations, and so forth. Psychology majors are among the most capable in handing relationships and knowledgeable in explaining our human qualities. In fact, psychology major is considered to be one of the most versatile and broadly applicable majors. Whether for personal reasons to be better individuals, husbands and wives, and parents or for occupational successes to be better skilled at interpersonal working relationships, psychology is practical and applicable. Whether working with healthy individuals or dysfunctional ones in counseling, psychology majors are equipped to handle a broad spectrum of issues and personalities.

In sum, students who major in psychology at Cedarville University are enhanced in their work to reconcile the world for Christ.

Dinosaurs and the Bible, Noah's Flood, Age of the Earth

Presentation Details:
Dinosaurs and the Bible
The topic of dinosaurs will be examined from a Biblical perspective. Did they really live millions of years ago? How did they die? Did men and dinosaurs ever live together? Carbon-14 dates and soft tissue preserved in various dinosaur fossils shows that they lived just a short time ago. Dr. Whitmore has been personally involved in dinosaur research that supports the Biblical record.

Noah's Flood
Most people think of Noah’s Flood as just a Biblical “story” that possibly couldn't be true. From his many years of experience as a geologist, Dr. Whitmore will present some easy to understand evidences that this was a real world-wide event. Fossils, dinosaurs, the former super-continent of Pangaea, and other topics will be addressed.

Age of the Earth
The age of the earth is one of the most controversial topics in Christianity today. As a geologist and a Christian, Dr. Whitmore has personally wrestled with this topic. The presentation will include a simple explanation of radioactive dating and its problems, evidence for a young earth and a discussion of the pitfalls of various harmonization ideas like the “gap theory” and “theistic evolution.”

The Nature of the Fossil Record, Geology of the Grand Canyon

Presentation Details:
The Nature of the Fossil Record
Paleontology is important because it can help us test various ideas about earth history including Darwin’s theory of evolution, the Genesis account of creation, and the account of Noah’s Flood. The data of the fossil record will be examined along with predictions made about the fossil record by Charles Darwin in the Origin of Species. There is exciting fossil evidence that questions modern evolutionary theory and supports the Biblical record. Dr. Whitmore has been studying paleontology for over 30 years.

Geology of the Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is perhaps the world’s greatest geological wonder. It is often presented as proof that the earth is millions of years old and that evolutionary theory is true. However, there is abundant evidence in the rocks of the Grand Canyon to the contrary. Dr. Whitmore has been actively involved in Grand Canyon research for 15 years and has made numerous raft trips down the Colorado River. His presentation will help you gain further appreciation for the truth of the Genesis narrative.
