A career prosecutor, Smith most recently served as the special counsel to U.S. Attorney Wilma Lewis in the District of Columbia. From 1998-1999, Smith was counsel to Deputy Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. at the U.S. Justice Department. In his role at the Justice Department, Smith also advised Attorney General Janet Reno on issues relating to criminal investigations, high-profile federal prisoners, computer-related crimes, and sentencing guidelines. His portfolio includes the U.S. Bureau of Prisons and the U.S. Marshal’s services as well as federal and local task forces.
From 1991-1998, Smith served as assistant U.S. attorney in the District of Columbia’s U.S. Attorney’s Office. During that time, he prosecuted hundreds of cases, including homicides and federal civil rights cases.
Originally from Washington, D.C., Smith is a 1989 graduate of the University of Virginia Law School, where he won the Trial Advocacy Award from both the University and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.
Smith is the recipient of numerous U.S. Attorney’s Office Special Achievement Awards and federal and local law enforcement honors. He received the Director’s Award from the Executive Office of U.S. Attorneys, the 2000 U.S. Attorney’s Team Award, and the Assistant U.S. Attorney’s Association’s John F. Evans Trial Advocacy Award. In 1998, Washingtonian magazine named Smith one of 40 rising-star lawyers under 40 years old.
