Cedarville, OhioThe Cedarville University Debate Team ranked fourth place in parliamentary debate against 70 other colleges and university teams at the Feb. 5-6 Sunset Cliffs Classic. This competition, hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University (San Diego, Calif.), involved approximately 400 students.
Two sets of Cedarville students finished as double octafinalists (within the top 32 teams) while another two sets were octafinalists (within the top 16 teams). Laura Davis (senior from Altus, Okla.) and Nathan Washatka (freshman from Howard, Ohio) were double octafinalists, as were Ryan Bower (freshman from Mohrsville, Pa.) and Matt Handley (freshman from Phoenixville, Pa.). Joe Dugan (sophomore from Dearborn, Mich.) and Nila Privedenyuk (freshman from Indian Orchard, Mass.) partnered to finish as octafinalists, as did the team of Laura Mruk (senior from Gurnee, Ill.) and Emily Van Vliet (senior from Rochester, Minn.).
In addition, Mruk received a first place speaking award in the junior division, topping the performances of approximately 130 other students. Van Vliet took fourth place in the same event.
The debate team is coached by Xenia resident Rebecca Sietman, who is an instructor of communication arts.
