Cedarville, Ohio-A Cedarville University professor's book on biblical wisdom literature and Psalms has been released. Dr. Daniel Estes, distinguished professor of Bible, wrote "Handbook on the Wisdom Books and Psalms" (Baker Academic, ISBN: 0-8010-2699-7, $34.99, Cloth) with college and seminary students, pastors, and Bible teachers in mind.
"In the book, I am trying to build a bridge between the student of the Bible and the scholarly research that has been done on the wisdom books and Psalms, so that the pastor, teacher, and student can make use of the recent study that has been done by many scholars," noted Estes. "My prayer is that this book will greatly enhance the teaching and preaching of these important books of the Bible."
In his book, Estes takes Psalms and the books of wisdom literature (Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs) and constructs three key sections for each: an introduction, an exposition in which he interacts with key commentaries and articles written in the past 10 years, and full bibliographies for further study.
Estes has taught at Cedarville since 1984 and specializes in the wisdom literature of the Bible. He earned his B.A. from Cedarville in 1974, his Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1978, and his Ph.D. from Cambridge University in England in 1988. The Worthington resident is also the author of "Hear My Son: Teaching and Learning in Proverbs 1-9," released by Eerdmans Publishing Company in 1997.
