Senior electronic media major Joren Kandel recently received an award for “Best Drama” at the NextGen Film Festival, sponsored by the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE).

His short video, titled “Vision,” portrays the transforming power of hope, as human potential is revealed in characters that seem unpromising. The film tells the story of a man’s mysterious camera that somehow sees beyond the human exterior, providing the characters with snapshots of what their lives could be.

Kandel’s entry was chosen based on his creativity, innovation, appropriateness to the drama category, and overall execution of the film. “Vision” competed against more than 300 other submissions from filmmakers in 18 countries. As the winner of “Best Drama,” Kandel will take part in an exclusive mentorship that includes personal consultations with an entertainment industry executive, paid conference registration to attend NATPE 2007 in Las Vegas, and a video editing software package.

The Red Lake Falls, Minn., native will graduate in December and hopes to eventually work for a video production house. “I’m not sure where my career will take me, but this award is certainly a huge stepping stone that will give me opportunities to enter the industry that I never thought were possible,” he said.

NATPE is a global, nonprofit organization dedicated to the creation, development, and distribution of televised programming across all mature and emerging media platforms. The NATPE Conference and Exhibition is the world’s first and America’s largest marketplace solely dedicated to television content.
