The Cedarville University Debate Team took first place in parliamentary debate at the recent Western Kentucky Debate Fiesta at Western Kentucky University. The team topped some formidable opponents, including the nationally recognized debate teams of McKendree College, Belmont University, and The University of Texas-San Antonio. The competition featured approximately 15 other colleges and 86 student competitors within the parliamentary debate division.
Top performances were led by the novice duo of John Cooper and Geneva Wilgus, who won first place in the novice debate team awards. Cooper also took first place in the novice speaking awards, Christen Price took second, and Wilgus took third. Price, along with her teammate Isaac Mayeux, won second place in the novice team debate category, and Pamela Eustace took third with Michael Shirzadian.
In the varsity debate team category, Jenna Marcum and Nate Washatka finished as quarterfinalists along with the team of Courtney Edmonds and Mark Miller.
The win at Western Kentucky followed on the heels of the team’s second place parliamentary debate finish at the Boilermaker Special Debate Tournament at Purdue University. There the Cedarville team competed against 20 other colleges and topped the nationally recognized teams of Patrick Henry College, Creighton University, and McKendree College.

Cooper also took first place in the novice speaking awards, Wilgus took second, and Christen Price took third. Jenna Marcum advanced to the octafinals in the varsity debate team awards.
The debate team is coached by Dr. Rebecca Sietman, who is an assistant professor of communication arts.
