Cedarville, Ohio—Gabrielle Boward knew Cedarville University had prepared her well, so when she learned about a nation-wide scholarship competition, she applied.

Now this junior electronic media major has one of two Walter Patterson Scholarships from the Broadcast Education Association (BEA), the professional association for professors, professionals and graduate students in the field of electronic media.

Cedarville, an institutional member of the BEA, provides electronic media majors with opportunities for involvement in the electronic media industry. This emphasis gave Boward the skills she needed to win the competition.

“This is an impressive credential for her resume,” says Dr. Wes Baker, professor of communication arts. “The fact that she was selected from a large pool of applicants for one of two scholarships will catch the attention of a prospective employer.”

The BEA considered her media experience, an essay on her career goals, her grades, and her references in their decision.

Because of the BEA’s standing in electronic media circles, this scholarship will help Boward in the future.
“I wish to work as a writer and producer in the film industry because humans are drawn to stories,” says Boward. “I hope to entertain my viewers while proclaiming the truth of the Gospel in ways that reach them.”

Boward’s media experience includes radio production with the campus radio station (Resound Radio) and live-action video production. She also interned at 91.3 WCSG-FM in Grand Rapids, Mich., and plans to work there again this summer.
