Three years ago, a student approached Julie (Furj) Kuhn, assistant professor of social work at Cedarville University, about promoting National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week to the University. A few months later, Kuhn and a team of social work students introduced a new initiative called “Dine Out for Hunger” to help local nonprofits serve the community.
This now annual event is special in three ways: it reveals the reality of local hunger; it offers the University family an opportunity to give; and it supports Cedarville restaurants.
During the weeklong event, local restaurants donate a percentage of their sales to a nonprofit that serves the hungry. Participating restaurants included Beans-n-Cream, Colonial Pizza, The Corner Bakery, Mom and Dad's Dairy Bar, Stoney Creek Roasters, and Subway. Cedarville social work students helped cover costs for the restaurants during the event by volunteering to deliver, clean, and prepare food.
The Dine Out for Hunger campaign raised nearly $600, which organizers donated to the Xenia Area Fish Food Pantry, a nonprofit that has been struggling to keep pace with an influx of need and homelessness in the Xenia area. Peg Cannon, director of the organization, said most of the money was used to replenish their meat freezer.
“The community benefits, the local businesses benefit, the non-profit benefits, and those who are struggling with homelessness benefit,” says Kuhn. “Everyone wins for a good cause!”
