Grounded in excellence and biblical truth, Cedarville University’s Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) focuses on preparing graduate students to be expert practitioners equipped for advancement in career and ministry.

The M.S.N. program, under the direction of Chu-Yu Huang, Ph.D., and Janet Conway, Ph.D., was launched in August 2011 and provides areas of focus in three career tracks: family nurse practitioner, nurse educator and global health ministries. Currently, the program consists of 20 full-time and part-time students, some graduates of Cedarville and more than half graduates from other universities of varying ages and backgrounds.

Amanda Minor ’07, a current M.S.N. student and currently working as a high-risk maternity nurse, said that the classes discuss biblical responses to ethical issues and professional situations that nurses encounter.

“The foundation of the program is centered on using nursing as a ministry for Christ,” Minor said.

The family nurse practitioner focus prepares graduates to provide primary care across the human life span and will equip students in areas such as assessment, diagnosis, health promotion and family education.

Graduates with the nurse educator focus gain advanced knowledge, clinical expertise and experience using evidence-based research as the foundation of their career. Students will be equipped to teach in health care or educational settings and will be qualified to seek national certification as a nurse educator.

The global health ministries focus prepares students to provide population-based care domestically and globally. The career track focuses on world health issues, environmental health, community development, societal structure and policy development.

“The four curricular organizers—godly living, care, culture and information management—guide the content and clinical experiences throughout the M.S.N. program,” Conway said. “M.S.N. students are expected to be able to synthesize a biblical worldview underlying the advanced nursing practice roles and responsibilities upon graduation.”

The M.S.N. program was developed based on national standards and received conditional approval by the Ohio Board of Regents in March 2010. The program was approved by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. A Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation site visit is scheduled for October 2012.

The nursing department hopes to develop a Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) in the future to meet the changing demands and needs of the nation’s complex healthcare environment.
