Fourteen Cedarville University nursing students helped move patients to the new Springfield Regional Medical Center (SRMC) Sunday, November 13. They worked alongside students and faculty from Clark State Community College and the SRMC School of Nursing.
The move began at 5:45 a.m. Students moved patients to their new rooms and made sure that all furniture and equipment were working properly. Six junior nursing students helped move patients in the birthing center while eight senior nursing students helped move patients from the emergency department and surgical units.
The students took the patients’ vital signs once they were settled in and completed any others tasks that they were given for that patient. It took the students and faculty members until noon to move all of the patients to their new rooms. The nurses at SRMC appreciated the help that they received.
“I think the most valuable thing I took away from the experience was remembering that hospital care is all about the patient,” said junior Meredith LePage. “It seems so easy to get caught up in charting or being stressed out about all of the little things that aren’t working around you, but ultimately your goal should be the well-being of the patient.”
The new medical center has 254 private rooms, 41 private emergency rooms and 24-hour visitation for most of the patient areas. This 475,000-square-foot building will be complete with the most advanced technology available. SRMC wants to achieve clinical excellence, superlative customer experience, operation efficiency, safety and long-term functionality and capacity.
