On September 23, Dr. Edwin Yamauchi will provide the inaugural lectures of the Integrating Piety and Scholarship Conference. Sponsored by the School of Biblical and Theological Studies, the conference is organized to highlight prominent Christian scholars who have integrated personal piety with their scholarly vocation.

Dr. Yamauchi, emeritus professor of history at Miami University, is a specialist in Mediterranean Studies, including archaeology, linguistics and biblical history. He has been a prolific author and Christian statesman, having served as president of the Evangelical Theological Society and the Near East Archaeological Society, among others. His seventeen books include Persia and the Bible, Peoples of the Old Testament World and Africa and the Bible. A co-founder and current elder of the Oxford Bible Fellowship, Dr. Yamauchi has been deeply involved in church life, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Campus Crusade for Christ, and missions. He and his wife, Kimi, live in Oxford, OH.

The first lecture, “Integrating Piety and Scholarship: Reflections on a Career as a Christian Academic,” will include personal reflections on over forty years as a Christian scholar and professor in the secular academy. In the second lecture, Dr. Yamauchi will speak on the topic of “Moses, Akhenaten, and Monotheism,” a critique of Sigmund Freud’s fascinating thesis that Moses gained his monotheistic faith from the Egyptian pharaoh, Akhenaten.

The public is welcome to each of these lectures which are offered without charge due to the generosity of the Thomas F. Staley Foundation.
