What’s St. Patty’s Day without a bit o’ music? On March 17—in honor of St. Patrick and the spirit of Irish festivity—The Demerits, a local band that plays Irish and American roots music, will perform “St. Patrick’s Night on the Town” at the Cedarville Opera House. The evening concert is intended to celebrate Irish folk music in the village of Cedarville.
Since their wee beginnings in 2003, The Demerits have recorded five CDs: “Plays Well with Others,” “Roadtrip,” “Not Far from the Tree,” “Made from Scratch,” and “Dance by the Light of the Moon.” Their unique sound derives from traditional tunes that are intricately arranged with harmonic and rhythmic complexity drawn from the works of Bach.
Recently, the department of music and worship at Cedarville University—where The Demerits were born and raised—has created a course in traditional Irish session music. Students in the class gather to perform sessions, playing jigs, reels and other Irish tunes in heavily populated areas. “Sessions are equal parts concert, ambient sound, music lesson and social gathering,” says Dr. John Mortensen, professor of music and instructor of the course. “It’s the best homework on campus.”
St. Patrick’s Night on the Town begins at 8 p.m. in the Cedarville Opera House. The cost to attend the Opera House concert is $5 per person. There will be a pre-show at Beans ‘n’ Cream at 7 p.m. and an after-show party at Stoney Creek Roasters at 9 p.m.
