Cedarville University’s Department of Kinesiology and Allied Health recently acquired a newer version of the Bod Pod. The new Bod Pod has the capability to obtain a more accurate measurement of body composition, and is renowned for its accuracy, reliability and ease of use.
The older version of the Bod Pod was only able to calculate weight and body fat percentage. Because the new Bod Pod has improved calculations, it is now able to calculate resting metabolic rate and design a personalized printout with enhanced charts and graphs.
The Bod Pod can tell the difference between a pound of fat and a pound of muscle. “Just stepping on the scale and seeing your weight does not indicate what your body is made up of,” said April Crommett, Ph.D., associate professor of exercise science.
The Bod Pod is so accurate that it even takes into consideration ethnicity because of the differences in bone density in different ethnic groups.
According to Crommett, the Bod Pod is used as part of a comprehensive fitness evaluation that determines risk for cardiovascular disease. In addition to blood pressure and cholesterol, body fat percentage has been linked to increased risk of heart disease and strokes. A sedentary lifestyle is also a risk factor for heart disease and often those who are sedentary become overweight.
The Bod Pod enables someone to track their body composition more effectively by detecting small changes in body fat and lean body mass, or muscle.
