For the past 19 years during homecoming Cedarville University’s Elmer W. Engstrom Department of Engineering and Computer Science has hosted a cardboard canoe race on Cedar Lake. This year’s freshman engineering class will create boats out of cardboard and packaging tape and will compete to see which boat can travel across the lake in the shortest amount of time.

Working in teams of three or four, the freshmen engineers will build boats out of 30 feet of cardboard and 100 meters of packing tape. Each team will have up to two upper-class advisors who have completed the project in prior years, and two team members must be in or on the canoe.

“The event allows freshman engineering students to apply their knowledge of simple physics to design and construct a vessel, which should accomplish the goal of floating two participants across the lake,” said Robert Chasnov, Ph.D., senior professor of engineering.

The members of the winning team will each receive a Ti-89 calculator as a prize.

The 19th annual cardboard canoe race will take place on Oct. 5 as part of the 2012 homecoming event. The race begins at 3 p.m., and the event is free and open to the public.
