To junior physics major Michelle Frazer, disc golf is more than just a sport; it is an opportunity to spend quality time with family. When Frazer’s parents discovered disc golfing while camping, the whole family decided to pick up the sport. Now the Frazers compete in five or six tournaments a summer.
Last summer while competing with her family at a Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) competition, Frazer became the women’s Amateur Division world champion. Frazer will now be in the Professional Division along with her two sisters.
The object of a disc golf game is to complete a course by throwing a disc or Frisbee into a basket target. The score is determined by counting the number of throws made on each hole and then combining the throws made from all holes. The player who completes the course with the lowest score wins.
The game’s popularity spread to Cedarville University last spring with the completion of a disc golf course on campus.
“Having a course on campus helps campus to feel more like home where my family and I play in our backyard,” said Frazer. “It’s close enough that I can just pop out of the dorm for a few holes before dark.”
The course was installed by the University when a group of students, staff, and faculty proposed the idea to the administration. The course was designed near the baseball field and now disc golfing is offered as an intramural sport. Frazer enjoys competing with about 20 of her classmates in the sport.
