Sculptor Jim Mellick will show his work Aug. 22 – Oct. 31 in an exhibit at the Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts in Gadsden, Ala. Mellick said the exhibit will include many of his sculptures from the last 20 years.

Mellick, an associate professor of studio art at Cedarville University, is known for his animal allegories, especially his sculptures of dogs. He is currently working on several new horse sculptures that will also appear in the exhibit.

Mellick said the humor and beauty of his work make it accessible to everyone. “People who don’t get the idea still appreciate the craftsmanship,” he said. Still, Mellick said his sculptures express truth in a unique way. “What I would like for them to appreciate about it is the truth-telling,” he said. “I like to leave something for the viewer to discover, with the subtlety and gentle nudge of a parable.”

Mellick has shown his sculptures in more than 160 exhibitions and has received numerous awards. His work was recently featured at the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio in Lancaster, as well as Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Indiana Wesleyan University and the Canton Museum of Art.

At Cedarville, Mellick teaches three-dimensional design, sculpture and printmaking. Mellick said balancing teaching with art is difficult, but he thinks it is important to set an example for his students as an active artist.

Before coming to Cedarville, Mellick taught at Colby-Sawyer College, founded the art program at Houghton College and led the sculpture program at Calvin College. His art is in numerous private, museum, corporate and academic collections. Mellick is a charter member of Christians in the Visual Arts and also belongs to Ohio Designer Craftsmen and The Furniture Society.
