Cedarville University freshman engineering students will compete in the annual cardboard canoe race Oct.4 at 3 p.m.

This race marks the 20th year for the cardboard canoe competition, which is held on Cedar Lake and sponsored by Cedarville University’s Elmer W. Engstrom Department of Engineering and Computer Science. Like past years, groups of three or four freshman engineering students will make canoes using 30 feet of cardboard and 100 meters of packaging tape.

The prize for each member of the winning team is a TI-89 calculator. Although only members of the engineering teams are eligible to win the calculators, students from all academic departments are invited to participate in the challenge.

The process of building and racing the canoes helps students apply the engineering design concepts they have learned thus far. “The students perform a proof-of-concept by getting into their boats and competing against others,” said Bob Chasnov, chair of the department of engineering and computer science.

The race, which is part of the 2013 homecoming event, is free and open to the public.
