Cedarville University will host the Hispanic Education Alliance’s fourth annual summit on Oct. 16 from 8:15 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the Dixon Ministry Center. Speakers will discuss challenges and strategies for encouraging academic success in the Hispanic community.

Featured speakers for the event include Harold B. Smith, president and CEO of Christianity Today, and Carlos Campo, Ph.D., president of the Alliance for Hispanic Christian Education. The event is free because of sponsorship by Cedarville and the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC), but online registration is required.

Summit breakout sessions will offer special tracks for pastors, educators and higher education professionals. Gus Reyes, Ph.D., will present Barna Group’s research on Hispanics, and Mike Haley, program director for Focus on the Family’s Raising Highly Capable Kids, will lead a session. Jesse Miranda, Ph.D., Esmeralda Sanchez and Reyes will also discuss the recruitment and retention of Hispanic students in higher education.

Multicultural admissions specialist Catherine Hernandez said she hopes the event will allow Cedarville to engage the Hispanic communities of Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati to talk about the church’s role in fostering growth there. “If the church is really the answer for the world, the church should be really involved in this issue,” Hernandez said.
