Cedarville University’s new diversity scholarship is not just for minority students, said director of multicultural enrollment Justin Spann. Incoming full-time undergraduate students of any race may apply now for the One Campus Diversity Scholarship.

Spann said the new scholarship is part of Cedarville’s initiatives to pursue aspects of diversity beyond ethnicity. “It’s not just about making campus more visually colorful,” Spann said. In addition to minority students, diversity scholarship recipients could include students from urban areas, first-generation U.S. citizens or college students, or students who have lived in international or multicultural communities.

According to Spann, diversity is crucial if Cedarville is to have worldwide impact through its students. “We believe it’s a mandate of the Gospel,” he said. “When people see us being able to overcome our cultural differences for the call of Christ, it makes a statement about what we believe.” Spann also said experiencing diversity is important to students’ professional education.

Although financial aid is a small part of Cedarville’s diversity initiatives, Spann said he hopes the scholarship will offer benefits on multiple levels by attracting students, meeting needs and offering an incentive for student involvement in enhancing diversity on campus.

Scholarship amounts will start at $1,000 and vary based on several factors, including students’ multicultural experiences, level of need and desire to enhance diversity at Cedarville. Applicants can choose to submit essays, interviews and recommendations to demonstrate these qualifications.

The scholarship will not be available to international students, who can receive a different grant. The application deadline is March 31, and scholarships will be awarded in April.
