Team Wins 10 Awards and Sets Record at Dayton Model United Nations Conference

Cedarville University students received 10 awards, setting a record for the most top awards received by a single school, at the 2014 Dayton Model United Nations Conference.

The conference’s top awards included outstanding and distinguished delegate awards for each of the conference’s four categories. Cedarville students earned three of the outstanding delegate and all four of the distinguished delegate awards. These, and an additional three honorable mention awards received, were the most awards ever earned by a school at the conference.

The conference was held at Sinclair Community College from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1. Other schools in attendance included Marietta College, Ohio Northern University, Sinclair Community College, the University of Dayton and Wright State University, which won the remaining outstanding delegate award.

The students on the team included Aaron Alford, Cincinnati, Ohio; Audrey Beck, Hartsville, S.C.; Amy Carmichael, Hamilton, Ohio; Jerilyn Cox, North English, Iowa; Ian Devins, Dearborn, Mich.; Michelle Frazer, Morgantown, Ind.; Drew Gilliland, Fort Collins, Colo.; Dan Hart, Bolivia; Chaney Isley, Brownsburg, Ind.; Lani Lear, Gallipolis, Ohio;  Caleb Little, Wheatfield, Ind.; Kelly Parliament, Wixom, Mich.; Dan Paulsen, Albuquerque, N.M.; and Matt Pinckard, Orland Park, Ill.

Devins, a team captain, said the team has performed well in the last few years, but this was the best year yet. As a senior, he said, it was the best way to end his participation in the conference.

“It was totally worth it to see the look on Dr. J’s face,” he said, speaking of Frank Jenista, Ph.D., the team’s faculty advisor. “On multiple levels, this has been a record-setting year. It’s hard to beat.”

Frazer, a team captain, said the team’s victory was an indication of the efforts given by the students involved.

“It’s a real testament to how hard working the team is and what everyone puts into it,” she said. “Working together and helping each other, it’s a real team effort.”

Students attending the model UN conference were each assigned a country to represent and a world issue to address. For the conference, they were placed into one of four committees, including Security Council, Simulated Security Council, UN-HABITAT and ECOSOC. To prepare, the participants studied their country’s policies and wrote position papers, statements of their country’s national policies which stated the positions they held throughout the conference. 

During the conference, participants worked with other delegates on their committee to address international issues. Devin said participants focused on collaborating while staying on policy and keeping firm on what their countries wanted. The conference allowed participants to see the issues the UN faces and learn how it works.

“It’s a very important body in international realms, so it’s good to know about it,” he said.

Frazer said the conference was a fun way to increase diplomacy skills and she enjoyed working with the other delegates.

“It’s an important skill to learn how to negotiate and work with people,” she said. “You have to explain your position and explain where everyone else is coming from. You’re trying to show how everyone can come to an agreement.”

Both captains said they were happy with the team’s performance and the outcome of the conference.

“It was the best year ever,” said Devins. “I’m really proud of everyone on the team. It’s about individual accomplishment, as well as the team, and all contributed. I’m very proud.”
