Domain Name Dispute Resolved in University's Favor
July 29, 2009
On May 14, The University sent a note concerning unsolicited emails being sent to our alumni.
As shared at that time, we notified alumni of the situation and provided them with the opportunity to limit public access to their online directory information. The University also initiated a process with the National Arbitration Forum requesting that the domain name from which these e-mails originated – cedarvillealumni.com – and six similar domain name registrations be transferred to Cedarville University. This action was taken in order to protect Cedarville's trademark and halt its improper use.
The domain name dispute was recently resolved in the University's favor. The review panel's decision recognized that the domain names were "confusingly similar" to Cedarville's 120-year old trademark and that the University had the legitimate right or interest in these domain names.
As a result, all seven of the Cedarville Alumni domain names now accurately direct alumni to www.cedarville.edu/alumni.
