Unsolicited E-mails Sent to Alumni

May 7, 2009

Note: See updated posting.

It has come to our attention that some alumni have received unsolicited e-mails that make false accusations against Cedarville University. We are saddened by this attempt to mislead and raise suspicions, and we share your concern that alumni e-mail addresses have been used in this way.

Although we are working to confirm the means by which the sender obtained Cedarville alumni e-mail addresses, one possible avenue may be an unauthorized use of our online alumni directory. This directory, developed as a service for our alumni family, is intended to encourage lifelong connections. As stated on our website, the directory is not to be used "to send any sort of solicitation to alumni you do not know."

We want you to be aware of this potential misuse of alumni e-mail addresses and encourage you to review any online directory information you may have placed at www.cedarville.edu/alumnidirectory. You have the option to customize visibility settings, including limiting access to your e-mail address and other contact data.

If you ever receive an unsolicited e-mail regarding Cedarville University and are unsettled by it, please take a moment to contact me at alumni@cedarville.edu or 800-837-2566. I welcome the opportunity to answer questions and talk through concerns.
