Cedarville University Theatre
2001-2002 Season
To our audience:
Our 2001-2002 season focuses on the theme: Adversity demands wisdom and courage.
Conflict is an inescapable element in life. Family challenges reflect the hopes and needs of different
ages, roles, and generations. All of us have been touched by the fear felt
and faith needed in dealing with terminal illness. Perhaps the greatest
challenge the Christian faces is rooted in the biblical mandate to respond
to attacks on our faith in God and the Bible with wisdom and compassion.
According to a popular maxim, "Circumstances do not make character-they
reveal it." This is true in all three of our main stage productions this
year.
Main Stage Productions
Husbandry
by Patrick Tovatt
Performance Dates: November 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17 2001
What was once a peaceful farming community in western Kentucky has become a battleground for survival for the traditional family farm. Farm policies, economic conditions, and the exodus of the next generation of farmers to city jobs have left one of the oldest icons of American culture practically bankrupt. Les and Dee Halstead are faced with the decision of either selling out before they go under physically and financially or convincing their son and his wife to move back home and take over the family business. While son Harry's "duty" is clear to his mother, it's not so obvious to him.
Steel Magnolias
by Robert Harling
Performance Dates: February 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16 2002
A celebration of friendship, Steel Magnolias is set in Truvy's beauty salon, where "anyone who is anybody" gets their hair done. Truvy, her assistant, and four of their regular customers range from ages 19 to 60, as well as from "new kid on the block" to the wife of the former mayor. Amid shampoos and free advice, these women face the excitement of weddings and trials of marriage, the joy of giving birth and the fear of life-threatening illness. Their story of strength and love - weaving lives together into a fabric that is stronger than any one life alone - is humorous, tender, and inspiring. A treat for all ages, Steel Magnolias is a tribute to friendship that goes the distance.
Inherit the Wind
by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee
Performance Dates: April 25, 26, 27 and May 2, 3, 4, 2002
Loosely based on the 1925 Scopes trial in Dayton, Tennessee, the courtroom becomes a battleground of thought. Tennessee state law of that time forbade the teaching of evolution, and a young teacher is accused of breaking this law. The legal titans of the era, along with the largest media circus to date, gather in a hot summer courtroom for the trial of the century. The issues raised in Inherit the Wind are still on trial today. This is a fast-paced and intense drama recommended for older children and all adults.
