Cedarville University Theatre
2002-2003 Season
As Cedarville University transitions to semesters in the fall of 2002, the theatre program will be making some exciting changes as well. There will still be three main stage productions each year, but one of those productions will be during Homecoming Weekend. The Theatre Arts Committee is excited about the opportunity this provides for more of our alumni to experience theatre in our new facility. While our plays for the 2002-2003 season don't fit neatly under a single theme, our selections were carefully chosen to provide not only high quality and superb entertainment, but to represent classic plays ranging from the comedy of Molière and Shakespeare to contemporary mystery. The season offers something for everyone.
Main Stage Productions
The Miser
by Molière
Directed by Mischelle McIntosh
Performance Dates: October 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 2002

Harpagon leads a memorable cast of characters in Molière's comic masterpiece, The
Miser. Set in a decaying Paris townhouse around the turn of the
twentieth century, the story of a stingy, aging miser and his children
unfolds. Daughter Elise and son Cleante struggle under their father's strict
control. Elise has fallen in love with the handsome Valiere, who has taken a
job as the servant in the household, in spite of his noble birth. The story
is complicated further by the fact that Cleante and Harpagon are both
smitten with the same young woman, the beautiful Marianne. Scheming fortune
hunters, Harpagon's paranoia, masterful plot twists, and unexpected
revelations contribute to this delightful and outrageously funny theatrical
production.
Wait Until Dark
by Frederick Knott
Directed by David Robey
Performance Dates: January 30, February 1, 6, 7, 8 2003
Wait Until Dark is a mystery drama that was critically labeled, "a rousing
example of the school of chilling menace that deserves the popular welcome
it seems certain to capture." Good vs. evil take on classic portrayals in
the pitting of Susy Hendrix - charming, intelligent, and courageous -
against Harry Roat, subtle and ruthless. The goal of the contest is the
possession of a smuggled doll which contains incredible wealth. Even though
she is blind, Susy sees through Roat's masquerade, and the battle of wills
begins. The final conflict results in what one critic called, "one of the
most terrifying scenes in theatre." While not for the weak of heart, Wait
Until Dark will provide an exciting evening for all who would like to
escape a cold winter night for a little adventure.
A Midsummer Night's Dream
by William Shakespeare
Directed by Rebecca Baker
Performance Dates: April 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 2003

William Shakespeare's tale of love and confusion has long been the most popular of
his comedies. Theseus, Duke of Athens, is planning wedding festivities. That
night, Hermia and Lysander declare the strength of their love by escaping
into the enchanted wood outside Athens. In hot pursuit comes the lovesick
Demetrius, pursued in turn by lovesick Helena. Unknowingly, the couples
become entwined in the love tangles already underway in the forest and
become hopelessly confused. Oberon, King of the Forest, has argued with his
queen, Titania, and sends mischievous Puck to humiliate Titania by causing
her to fall in love with the first person she sees, no matter how lowly.
Meanwhile, a group of rustic tradesmen have come to the forest to rehearse
their play, and Puck transforms Bottom the weaver into the donkey-headed
favorite of Titania. Midsummer madness evaporates with the dawn and the
couples are happily paired and return to Athens for a triple wedding, the
festivities of which feature the "lamentable comedy" of bottom and his
rustics. The cast of more than 20 men and women features a variety of acting
roles, some of whom sing and dance.
