Cedarville University Theatre - 2003-2004 Season
One of the central themes that links all three of our main stage productions this year is "The Search for Truth." We live in a world where truth is often sacrificed in the name of tolerance or political correctness; a world where illusion often clouds our view of reality. Is it acceptable to embellish history in order to do justice to the past? Is true beauty more than just physical appeal? Is personal freedom more important than societal accountability? The stories portrayed on stage this season will not only present answers to these questions for your consideration, but will delight and intrigue you as well.

Lettice and Lovage
by Peter Shaffer
Directed by David Robey
Performance Dates: October 11, 16, 17, 18, 2003
Set in contemporary England, Lettice Duffet, an expert on Elizabethan life, is an indefatigable enthusiast of history and the theatre. A tour guide at the historically dreary Fustian House, Lettice discovers that tour guests prefer dramatic narrative over passionless facts. The growing theatricality and romance to her tours draws large crowds of tourists along with the wrath of the Royal Preservation Trust. Lotte Schon, an inspector from Trust, is not impressed or entertained by Lettices charades and fires her. Yet, gradually Lotte becomes fascinated by Lettices world-view and the two women forge an alliance to awaken their fellow citizens to the dreariness and danger of modern life. Lettice and Lovage was written in 1987 and was proclaimed by the New York Post "an evening of enchantment and delight." USA Today called it, "A celebration of imagination," and The Sunday Express described the play as "one of the sharpest, wittiest, most passionate and elegant plays of the year." We hope you can be with us for this delightful comedy.

The Masque of Beauty and the Beast
by Michael Elliot Brill
Directed by Mischelle McIntosh
Performance Dates: January 30, 31, February 5, 6, 7 2004
This classic fairy tale is brought to life in the manner of a 16th century Masque. The narrator and players weave a wonderful tapestry of theatrical enchantment as they tell the story of a beautiful young girl who meets a horrible beast and ends up with the handsome prince of her dreams. This delightful story will captivate the child in all of us, no matter what our age in years. From "Once upon a time" to "They'll live forever after, happily," you'll love this magical hour of theatre.

All My Sons
by Arthur Miller
Directed by Rebecca Baker
Performance Dates: March 25, 26, 27 and April 1, 2, 3, 2004
Set in WWII America, All My Sons champions the necessity for personal integrity in the face of political expediency. Arthur Miller's powerful yet compassionate drama reveals characters who struggle, as we do today, to live and love honorably in a world where traditional rules of conduct are challenged by war.
The story revolves around Joe Keller and his partner who run a machine shop which manufactures airplane parts. Defective cylinder heads caused the death of more than 20 combat fliers, and Keller's partner was sent to prison. However, Keller escapes condemnation and remains a free and wealthy man. Keller has two sons - Larry, a pilot declared missing in action, and Chris, who has just returned from combat in the South Pacific. Chris leaves the foreign battlefield to find himself on the battlefield of his backyard where he faces his greatest enemy. The story drives explosively to the electrifying final confrontation between father and son.
Winner of the 1947 Drama Critics' Award for best new American play, All My Sons demonstrates how theatre can timelessly challenge social consciousness and personal integrity.
