The
People
People who live in the Arctic Region are called Aborigional people, or
Inuits. There are different people groups
living in different parts of the Arctic. Each group has a different
name. They have lived in this region for centuries!
Inuit people speak English, Russian, or Danish plus their native language.
Inuvialuktun is the name of the language
that Western Arctic Inuit people speak.
Since the Arctic environment is very harsh, the people use the sea and
land to survive.
Many
Inuit people live like you! They wear clothing made from fabric instead
of skins. They live in houses instead of igloos made
of ice.
The
Communities
Communities are different in size. Some have a few people and some
have up to a thousand.
The community is like a town. The people trade with each other, go
to school, and help each other survive.
What
does the Inuit community do to stay busy? They hunt, fish, and make
arts and crafts as their main activities!
The
Culture
Arts
and crafts are unique with Inuit people.
A key part of Inuit culture are Inuksuks. They are stone structures used
to mark good spots for hunting and
fishing. Some people say that Inuksuks are sacred. They look
like this.
