New Zealand covers a wide variety of geographical features for an island that is only 104,453 sq. miles. It goes from mountain tops to below sea level. The highest point Mount Cook is 12,316 feet above sea level. Mount Cook is located in the Southern Alps Mountain Range that runs Southwest to Northeast. One quarter of New Zealand is protected wilderness. The country has also remained pollution free. It is a land of mountains with a more seasonal climate. Fiords, glaciers, lakes and the coastal plains of Canterbury and Southland add to the variety of the South Island scenery. In the North Island the volcanic interior contains NZ's largest lake, Lake Taupo, and most of the country's active volcanoes - Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro -
