History

In 1624, the first Dutch settlement was in Fort Orange now known as Albany.
A year later a man bought land from the Indians and founded a Dutch Colony
named New Amsterdam which is now New York City.  The colony of New
York became a state on July 26, 1788.  The people of New York formed
their own state government less than a week after the Declaration of
Independence was signed.
