The musical opened off broadway in 1967 but made it to Broadway soon after it was released
It celebrated long hair, drugs, free love, anti-war, and anti-establishment. It was very popular, but also brought with it much controversy due to it's content.
The
musical went on to win the Tony Award for Best Musical Play and Best Director
of a Musical Play.
