SAE Formula

[Back to Competitions]

Formula racing usually elicits thoughts of high-speed vehicles racing around an oval track at speeds in excess of 200 MPH. At least that?s what motivated our students to check out the Formula SAE. For the safety-conscious, SAE?s version is scaled-down (650 cc engine) and not "wheel-to-wheel" (individual cars race only against the clock). FSAE had progressed through a number of design iterations by teams of seniors when the 2004 team took up the challenge of finalizing the design, constructing and testing the vehicle, and taking it to competition.

Though the team did not realize their goal of scoring in all seven events due to a suspension member failure, the vehicle passed the stringent safety inspection and competed admirably. The team of underclassmen came away from the 2004 competition armed with tremendous motivation to excel in 2006...stay tuned!
