Living on Campus
Summer 2008
We are excited about your plans to join us for graduate classes on the campus of Cedarville University this summer. The following information is provided to assist you in planning and to ensure a positive living experience while in residence.
Housing
Each graduate student will have his/her own air-conditioned room, furnished with a bed, desk, chair, and dresser. Students must complete a housing request form to reserve a room. Men and women will reside on opposite sides of Faith Hall. Please bring bath towels, bed linens for a twin bed, and pillow. Keys will be issued upon check-in with Student Life. Payment for housing ($99 per week) will be reconciled during check-in on the first day of classes.
Computers
Each residence hall room is equipped with a printer and a PC that connects to CedarNet, the University's computer information network. CedarNet provides access to over 150 commercial software packages, extensive online library resources, and high-speed Internet. Printers in Faith Hall are HP 1315 printer/scanner/copier units. Each printer needs an HP27 (black) and HP28 (color) or a high-yield HP56 (black) and HP57 (color) printer cartridge. Printer cartridges are the responsibility of the student and may be purchased at the University bookstore. Free black and white academic printing is available in the Apple 115 and SSC 103 computer labs. The University has the technical ability and legal authority to monitor access to on-campus and off-campus websites and may conduct reviews of network activity at its discretion. Please familiarize yourself with the computer expectations listed in the student handbook.
Meals
Most students enjoy eating meals in the University dining hall located in the Stevens Student Center. As a summer graduate student, you will pay $2.50 for breakfast, $3.00 for lunch, and $3.50 for dinner, all served buffet style. Local restaurants include Subway, Mom and Dad's Dairy Bar, Main Street Station, Beans & Cream, and Colonial Pizza. You may bring a microwave oven and dormitory-sized refrigerator for your room.
Laundry
Coin-operated washers and dryers are available in Faith Hall. The Cedarville Laundry (downtown) is available for use as well.
Personal items and snacks
The University bookstore is a convenient one-stop for textbooks and school supplies. It also has a great selection of Bibles, gifts and cards, University logo items and sportswear, CDs, trade books, candy, and a small selection of toiletries. A small grocery store/gas station, the Village SuperValu, is located across from the main entrance of the University.
Health
There are several hospitals (Community Hospital and Mercy Hospital in Springfield and Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia), urgent care facilities, and pharmacies (Cedarville Pharmacy, CVS, IHS, K-Mart, Kroger, and Wal-Mart) in the area, most within 20 minutes from campus. Please remember to bring your insurance card with you.
Phones
Many students have a cell phone, so a room phone is not usually needed. However, each dorm room has its own private phone line with which students may make or receive calls. Phones will be available at registration check-in on the first day of classes if needed. You may call collect or use a calling card. Dial 5, then 0 plus the area code and number for collect calls, or 5 and then the number for a calling card. The room's phone number will be 937-766-#### (a four-digit number that may be determined by dialing 3333).
Church
Several churches are located within a short distance of the University. Churches in Xenia or Springfield can be recommended as well.
Clothing
Modest casual dress (including jeans and capris) is acceptable for classes (no shorts, please). Appropriate shorts may be worn on weekdays after 4:00 p.m. and on weekends.
Campus Safety
Campus safety and security staff are on duty 24 hours a day and can be reached at (937) 239-6491 or 999 from a campus phone. Call 911 in case of emergency. Student ID cards will be issued on the first day of classes during the morning break (10-10:30 a.m.). Vehicle registration will also be completed on the first day. If you have a vehicle sticker from last year, you can simply update the registration form with last year's sticker ID number; otherwise a new sticker will be issued. There is no charge for either of these services.
Library
The Centennial Library, named in recognition of the University's centennial celebration in 1987, provides access to over 204,800 print and non-print resources, over 15,700 periodicals in various formats, and nearly 200 electronic research databases. The library also includes the MediaPlex, Curriculum Materials Center, an Information Commons, computer classrooms, and a variety of individual and group study facilities. Wireless internet access is available throughout the library. As a member of OhioLINK, a cooperative of 86 Ohio university and special libraries, access to more than 10.2 million unique titles are available through the online catalog and requesting system. Online services, resources, and hours of operation are available at the Centennial Library's website.
