Faculty in Focus

Each faculty member in the Department of Language and Literature will broaden your thinking, stretch your horizons, and challenge your mind. They will care about you as a person and encourage you to grow in your relationship with Christ. As the faculty integrate biblical truth into their courses, they also foster a desire for knowledge, an enthusiasm for creative expression, and excellence in critical thinking.

English and integrated language arts students will learn the writing craft from published and nationally recognized creative writers. For example, Professor Ryan Futrell has published poetry in The Cresset, 88: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts, Caketrain, Poetry Motel, and Flights as well as short fiction in Virginia Adversaria, Harper Palate, Zone 3, and Square Lake. He has been nominated for Scribner's Best of the Fiction Workshops and New American Voices and has twice been nominated for The Pushcart Prize.

The department's Spanish faculty encourages students to maximize their personal potential. They stay current in their teaching fields through course preparation, conference presentations, research, and travel. For example, Dr. Andrew Wiseman spent the spring and summer of 2004 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, as Cedarville University's first Fulbright Scholar. In addition to teaching Spanish and English as a second language, he leads the University's travel studies office, which coordinates Cedarville's exchange programs with Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

Cedarville's TPC faculty are experts in the field of technical communication and have a passion for preparing students for success. Through their professional involvement, they have developed outstanding contacts with industry professionals, some of whom serve on the TPC Industry Advisory Board, and others who recruit students for permanent employment and internships. Along with her teaching responsibilities, Professor Sandra Harner is an independent consultant and contract writer and serves on the Society for Technical Communication's (STC) Board of Directors. Professor Harner was named a Fellow of STC in 2001; in 1997, STC awarded her the first-ever STC Faculty Internship Grant and the STC Jay R. Gould Award for Excellence in Teaching.
