The Amazing Race

This year the Centennial Library Undergraduate Experience (C.L.U.E.) was put to rest and a new and more interactive Library Orientation, The Amazing Race, was set in motion.

Students enjoying Amazing Race

Teams of freshmen were provided Passports that gave them directions for discovering six different resources or services available in and through the Centennial Library.  After completing the required task for each area, their passports were stamped and the groups were allowed to proceed to the next area.  At the finish line students were asked to complete an evaluation and redeem it for an ice cream bar.  Congratulations to Leah Price and Courtney Mumme, our winners in the drawing for the Cedarville University Bookstore gift certificates.

New Resource - Opposing Viewpoints

The Opposing Viewpoints series has been a print resource used for many years by Composition and Fundamentals of Speech students, for information that presents both sides of an issue.  The Centennial Library collection of 140 titles has now been updated by the Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center.

The Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center provides full text access to over 2.7 million articles in several different formats (academic journals, magazines, multimedia, news, primary sources, reference, statistics, viewpoints, and websites).   Multiple search methods and limiting options are provided on the initial search screen.  You may search by subject, by keyword or the entire document and limit results by content level and type.  The Popular Topics list provides a quick access to over 100 hot topics. Education majors will be interested in the links from National and State Curriculum Standards to articles that support the teaching of these standards.

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is available from the Library's website under Find Databases & Articles - "O" - Opposing Viewpoints Resources Center.

Charging Student Accounts

"Can I charge that to my student account?" is a question heard frequently by those who work at the Circulation desk in the Centennial Library.  Well, now the answer to that question is, "Yes!"  Students may charge library fines to their university student account.  This new service allows the student to clear their library record of all fines, giving them immediate access to all library services.  Fines will routinely be charged to student accounts during the last week of each month.  Students may request a library fine be placed on their student account at any other time.  If you have any questions or would like to have a fine charged to your account, please ask at the Circulation desk.

Where's the Fiction?

The Centennial Library does have fiction books in the collection; you just need to know how and where to look. Fiction books are shelved in the 800s.  Children's fiction is in the Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) also in the 800s.  The 800s includes all sorts of materials having to do with literature, so you'll also find criticisms of literature, drama, speeches, and letters.

You can use the library catalog to locate fiction reading.  You can do a subject search for, "Christian Fiction", "graphic novels" or "fantasy."  Some subjects may also have "fiction" as a subdivision, such as "Brazil - fiction." You can also search the catalog for your favorite author or title, using the Author or Title search.  Remember all these searches, Subject, Author, and Title also work in the OhioLINK catalog.  So if we don't own a book, make sure you run the same search in OhioLINK to see if another library owns the book.  It will be delivered to the Centennial Library in about 3 days.

You also have one more option.  You can browse the fiction section in the Centennial Library.  On the lower level of the library you'll find the 800s.  813 is American fiction; 813.69 is Christian fiction; 823 is English fiction; 833 is German fiction, etc.  Remember along with the fiction, you'll find books with collections of fiction, history and criticism, and books on the study and teaching of the fiction or authors.  Take time to read something other than your text book.  You might enjoy it!
