Cedarville University Online Courses

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need special hardware or software?

Normally a relatively current computer is sufficient. A high speed internet connection is best, but dial-up connections are adequate for most courses, if the ISP does not impose strict file size or online time limits. If there is a question, check with individual course instructors to verify the specific requirements for their course.

What type of learner successfully completes online courses?

You must be self-motivated, self-directed, and well organized -- definitely not a procrastinator. Expectations will be clearly defined, but seeing that they are accomplished in a timely manner is your responsibility. A number of small assignments each week rather than a few big items at the end of the semester will help, but keeping up is your responsibility. Look at What Makes a Successful Online Student or the WebCT Student manual Studying Online.

How do I register for an online course?

Registration for online courses uses the same process as all other Cedarville courses. See the Registration page on this site for specific details.

How am I tested in an online course?

Most online course professors adopt a "many small assessments" testing strategy where quizzes and tests are given online at least weekly. In an engagement pedagogy model, your participation through postings and critique of classmate's postings also carries a significant grade fraction. These methods provide frequent, rapid feedback which is consistent with good teaching-learning practice and proven to produce superior learning results. You should always know how you're doing in the course and where you stand against the stated grading standard.

The quizzes and tests are normally available to you online for a specific length of time during a defined block of time -- usually at the end of each weekly block.

Do I determine my own pace?

When you do the work each day is your option, but most courses intentionally have prescriptive schedules that keep you involved and functioning as a member of your class learning community. Continuing interaction with the professor and the other students several times each week is the key to successful online learning.

Cedarville Online Courses are definitely not self-paced, work-alone courses where you turn in the work at the end of the semester.

How do I login to my course?

Look at WebCT's Preparing to Take WebCT Courses.

What if I have technical problems?

First, review the login /course sign-in instructions that you have been given and be sure your computer and browser are operating properly.

Contact your Internet Service Provider (AOL, etc) using their tech support number. This is particularly important if you are having trouble downloading files or being timed-out or cut off while working online.

If that doesn't work, email a description of your problem to the online course help.

A system is maintained that should provide a response within twenty-four hours.

How do labs work?

Several courses-especially Biology and Earth Science-contain a series of labs. In some cases you are provided a kit of materials and equipment that allow the lab to be accomplished and the results sent to the professor. In other courses, a software package provides virtual labs that are conducted entirely online.

Are Summer Online Courses compatible with MIS trips and other summer activities?

Cedarville online courses have prescriptive weekly participation requirements that in many cases do not allow for significant absent time. However, each course has a different structure and each professor a different flexibility to allow working ahead or catching up to accommodate conflicts. Of course, you can work on the course anywhere you have a computer and internet access.

If you anticipate a significant conflict or need to start late or finish early, discuss the situation with the professor before registering for the class.

Are there limits on the number of online courses I can take?

Online courses are regular courses and thus subject only to the general rules that govern the number of hours you may take in your particular academic status.

How does financial aid apply to Online Courses?

Financial aid rules normally do not differentiate between online and face-to-face courses.
