MIS Germany 2008

Extra $ [Updated 12.19.07]

Will we need any extra cash for personal items while we travel? What about personal spending?

Our primary expenses (travel, lodging, meals, etc.) will be covered through the support we raise.

If you want some personal mementos not covered by our support, you can use a personal credit card in most countries. Do not bring travelers checks. Germany/Europe is much-more of a cash based society than the US. If necessary, after we arrive in Germany, we will exchange our American dollars for Euro dollars. In Kandern, most places only take cash.

I personally do not like debit cards but rather true credit cards. I would bring some cash along, maybe $100 and exchange it as soon as I get to Europe. Use the euro when you have to and charge the big stuff. I would also not use the exchange place at the airport, you will not get as good of a return as you would if you went to a bank. ALSO ... we put our money together and 1 or 2 people went to the bank and exchanged rather than 10-12 wanting to exchange $50-100 each. There is a process so getting it done in one exchange is best!

Best wishes!

Note that credit card companies will often surcharge you for the exchange rate. I would say bring the cash you plan to spend and exchange some of it at the beginning of the trip (as a group like Scott suggested) then allow for one more group exchange later if needed.
