MIS Germany 2008

Packing - Part I

How much luggage will I need to take for the trip?

Requirements for luggage allowance may vary from airline to airline. In most situations, one (1) carry-on item not to exceed 40 lbs., and two (2) suitcases not to exceed 50 lbs. each are allowed. As the date draws closer and we purchase our tickets, we'll verify the specific expectations/limitations for the airline.

Generally, each person takes a carry-on, one piece of luggage, and either a piece of equipment or a container of ministry supplies as their second piece of luggage.

As you consider packing clothing, toiletries, and supplies, think "simplicity" and "flexibility". Remember, camp is not a "fashion show". Europeans tend to be "minimalists" when it comes to clothing...meaning Americans tend to own more clothing. According to a missionary in Germany, Germans will often wear the same outfit two days in a row and nobody thinks anything about it.

Pack a variety of clothing for fluctuating temperatures. We could experience both hot and cold/rainy weather during the same camp period.

If you do need to wash anything, staff members are responsible for doing their own laundry during free time. The camp has laundry facilities that we can use at no charge. All of the dorms have washers and dryers and the camp provides detergent.

One former MIS participant made the comment to me a couple of years ago that she took too much with her...even after thinking how she could "simplify". She said that if she were to go on another MIS trip, she would "simplify" even more.

As the date for our trip draws nearer, we'll update our packing discussion.
