About the Center

The Center for Bioethics at Cedarville University will articulate, integrate and defend a biblical view of ethics, educate others about this view, and engage and influence the broader American culture. We seek to glorify God through scholarship, dialogue and service.

  • Articulate and Integrate - The Center has scholarly research at its core, with such research focused on discerning and presenting biblical perspectives on relevant bioethical issues.
  • Educate - The Center's activities are educational in nature, with the emphasis on undergraduates and young professionals in medicine, scientific research, and law.
  • Engage - The Center will engage the broader American culture by addressing the pressing bioethical issues of our day: genetics, cloning, stem cell research, reproductive ethics, marriage and family, abortion, death and dying, and the environment. Each of these areas has profound religious and social dimensions.

In seeking to fulfill Center goals, associates and fellows will:

  • Teach relevant courses at Cedarville University
  • Equip Cedarville students with a biblical understanding of issues in bioethics
  • Sponsor and lead symposia for members of the academic, political, and cultural communities
  • Publish to engage the academic and medical communities
  • Speak publicly and engage the media on bioethical issues
  • Provide research opportunities for Cedarville students considering graduate education in medicine, nursing, bioethics, ecology, business, or law
  • Pursue producing peer-reviewed publications including a Journal of Biblical Bioethics.

Cedarville University already leads the way in promoting a biblical view of stewardship and scientific study. Our faculty uphold a God-centered worldview of the sciences and integrate biblical principles into every course. Cedarville's strong commitment to the authority of Scripture serves as the basis for discussions on medical ethics, the sanctity of life, and the integration of faith and learning. The development of the Center for Bioethics is a natural outgrowth of the University's outstanding academic reputation in the sciences, our commitment to biblical integration, and our desire to engage the culture with the heart and mind of Christ.
