Commitment to Biblical Truth

Cedarville University exists to educate students through the presentation of a distinctly biblical worldview. Education in all the disciplines is permeated with a commitment to viewing Scripture as the ultimate guide in the pursuit of truth.

In our culture, however, both the truth of Scripture and objective truth in general are being questioned. Society is sometimes skeptical of the ability to know anything about the world or the Bible. These issues have risen to such a level that they cannot be ignored, prompting the University to take a clear stand regarding truth and the degree to which it may be known.

In August, 2006, the Board of Trustees approved a resolution addressing the subject of Truth and Certainty. The following statement, also prepared by the Board of Trustees, serves as an executive summary and articulates the essence of the complete resolution:

  • The Holy Scriptures as found in the books contained in the Old and New Testaments constitute a sure and certain revelation from God. The Scriptures are both inerrant (contain no error) and infallible (will not lead astray). Limitations in human ability and the ravages of sin interfere with our ability to interpret its message, but the Bible's message is true and certain in its entirety. The great doctrines of the Faith are given in the Holy Scripture with such clarity that we can be wholly certain of these truths.

All faculty members must affirm their agreement with the Truth & Certainty statement (as well as our doctrinal statement) in order to teach at Cedarville University. Biblical truth has, is, and always will be the heart of Cedarville University.

Academic inquiry at Cedarville finds its ultimate value in Truth. Apart from this foundation, our efforts to develop leaders and provide an excellent education lack the "forever perspective" that is the heart of the Cedarville experience. With all faculty, staff, and trustees annually affirming our doctrinal statement, we affirm God as the ultimate authority. Principles from God's Word guide discussions about ethics, politics, education, creation, literature, theatre, the media, and every other subject. At Cedarville academics mean much more than learning information and practicing skills. We are preparing each student for a lifetime of careful thought and compassionate ministry.

Reinforced in daily chapels and integrated into every academic discipline, the foundation of this training is the Bible minor required of all students. Through six carefully crafted courses, talented Bible professors teach the content of Scripture and its relevance for all of life. The goal is transformation – equipping Cedarville graduates to be Christ-centered influencers at all levels of society, empowered by God's Spirit and equipped with His Word.
