Missions Involvement - Music/Drama Teams
Since 1971 many music/drama teams have ministered in foreign countries. Some of these countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czech Rep., England, Jamaica, New Zealand, and Spain. These teams work with the local church or missionary who will schedule an itinerary and do public relations work in the area. These teams are used not only to enhance the ministry, but also help to draw in many unchurched people who may otherwise not attend a regular worship service. Music teams are not limited to church services, however, they also perform in public schools and universities, shopping malls, nursing homes, public parks, or wherever they may be likely to gain public attention. They've even been known to give mini-performances in the air as they travel to their destination.
Besides giving musical performances these teams are prepared to be used in whatever way they can be of service to the local ministry. They may do door-to-door canvassing, distribute literature, or minister through friendship evangelism. They have also aided the ministry through supplying physical labor. They may paint, clean, build, provide child care, help with laundry, or serve wherever there is a need.
One of the first questions asked about joining a music team is, "What are the requirements?" The best answer to that is having a heart to minister through music. Music teams are chosen early in January after all auditions and interviews of those interested have taken place. Once the teams have been chosen, they will begin practicing weekly but will not exceed six hours during a week. This time will also include organizing, shopping for team outfits, contacting the missionaries, praying, and preparing spiritually.
