Transitions Program
» What is Transitions?
Transitions is a program that includes both a study skills course and supplemental academic resources that will enable you to develop your full academic potential. Transitions will particulary benefit you if you possess the ability and motivation to succeed in college, yet have college entrance examination scores or a grade point average lower than Cedarville University's requirements for regular admission.
» Who should take Transitions?
Eligibility for Transitions is determined by CU's application for admission. Enrollment is limited, and if you are admitted, you must demonstrate the desire and motivation to perform at the collegiate academic level.
» What does Transitions involve?
Transitions has several components, all of which are designed to advance your academic progress. The course is during fall semester, and the other components extend throughout your entire first year at CU.
- Transitions course (COLL 1000)
Topics covered include note taking, studying, paper writing, test taking, learning styles, effective learning strategies, library usage, computer usage, time management, and balancing life. This course is not for credit. - Tutoring
Tutoring is available in certain courses as needed for you to grasp the material. - Customized scheduling and advising
These monitor your academic progress, ensuring that you take courses appropriate to your career interests and abilities.
» Who will advise me?
You will work with two advisors: your Transitions instructor and a specifically chosen faculty advisor in your major. Your advisors will guide your selection of courses, monitor your academic progress throughout the year, and discuss with you any particular problems you might encounter. In addition, Rebecca Kuhn, instuctor and learning specialist at The Cove, will be available to both you and your parents to make sure your college experience is successful.
» How will Transitions affect my schedule?
In most instances, you will take general education courses your first year at CU. Consequently, your schedule will be similar to that of other new students. Rebecca Kuhn will work closely with your faculty advisor to determine the best schedule for you. Your Transitions course will meet either Monday/Wednesday/Friday or Tuesday/Thursday just like other classes. The other components will not affect your daily schedule.
» How will Transitions affect my major?
You will be permitted to declare your major, but you will be limited in how many courses in your major you may take your first year. This is particularly true in majors such as engineering, nursing, computer science, and biology. If you have not yet declared a major, you will take courses from the general education core requirements (English, biblical education, communications, physical education, etc.) until you determine the right major for you. The different components of Transitions will help you determine what that major might be.
» Will Transitions affect my extracurricular activities?
No. Extracurricular activities can often benefit you academically. You may want to consult with either of your advisors to determine the best activities for you as you balance your academic and social schedules.
» How will my academic progress be evaluated?
You will receive grades in each of your regular college courses at the end of each term as well as mid-term progress reports. Your combined grade point average will be used to evaluate your overall performance. You, like all students, will be required to meet the regular academic progress guidelines outlined in CU's catalog.
» What does Transitions cost?
There is a $450 course fee to help cover the cost of the faculty and resources you are provided through Transitions.
» Is Transitions successful?
The majority of students who have participated in Transitions have gone on to experience successful college careers. The graduation rate of the students admitted to Cedarville University through Transitions matches or exceeds that of the rest of the student body. Let Transitions equip and motivate you to reach your full potential!
